p.s. hence I propose a play on words with Leonid Brezhnev and Bush, like "Buszhnev" ;)

I looked up, to make it short: invasion in 1979, military draw in 1982, Gorbachev's election in 1986 (who promised to end the war), complete withdrawal in 1989, next civil war in 1992.

You see any similarities...? ;)

7 years after the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan, Gorbachev was elected, like Obama was elected 7 years after the US invasion in Afghanistan.

So please assume that US troops are withdrawn in 2011, followed by a civil war in 2014.

I just uploaded an actual cartoon that illustrates my immigration position:

However, I AM thinking of doing an "OBOMBA" bumper sticker. Maybe it'll sell in Afghanistan:)

I didn't mean to create this big a stir. To answer some questions: No, I don't think McCain would be doing any better than Obama. I don't know enough about Palin to say, but I suspect she wouldn't either. I'm a Ron Paul conservative. I supported him, and still do.

I feel that it's the right and duty of a country to determine what people are allowed in, to visit, work, get education, or immigrate. Otherwise, what's the point in having different countries and governments? The US and Western Europe seem to be obsessed with NOT being selective these days, but most all other countries are very picky. Israel and japan come to mind.

As for the US economy being dependent on illegal immigrants... The economy isn't a unit. Some sectors of the economy depend on them, just like some sectors depended on slavery 150 years ago. In both cases, some people became wealthy as a result, but the nation as a whole paid the price. That's called privatizing profit and socializing costs.

And I didn't say I wanted the US to isolate itself. I meant that I want us to stop _interfering_ with other countries — Invading them, threatening them, bribing them, etc.

The problem with immigration is assimilation. Pre-1965, when the laws were changed, most immigrants to the US willingly assimilated, and didn't create pockets of alien culture that remained exclusive. A good example is the Germans, who soon lost any loyalty to the German nation and culture, and became Americans in the most complete sense.

Are you sure withdrawal from the MidEast would take that long, necessarily? How long did it take the Russians to pull out of Afghanistan when they decided to? I'm asking. I really have no idea, but I think it was fairly quick.

At any rate, I won't put up any more bumper stickers. I get in enough trouble from the cartoons:)

Okay, I see. And you are right about the economical meaning of immigrants, whether they're legal or not, and that's applicable for most of the 'western' countries.
Back to this image: I think it IS a cartoon, because it has a satirical and political statement, designed in rmay's typical font, though it's just a word.

... as I have said earlier: there is a selection taking place. it may be based on written codes and thus not be totally random but we're clearly not accepting everybody. a plane full of Vietnamese people was sent back from Schönefeld on Monday, there is this whole thing about the Roma family and so on. Just think about the whole limitation of freedom of movement in the EU for people from those sketchy Eastern European states.

I disagree. There is a positive "Green Card"-kind selection. As well as a negative selection in terms of visa, eligibility for political asylum, language prerequisites for naturalization.
And that's only the legal part - I am sure inofficial stereotypization has real effects as well.

What do you mean, Peter, Germany is not taking any immigrants? That's true in some cases, mostly in connection with some nonsense terrorism fear, but Germany has lost the right to select people, and that's okay with me.
