Headless Horseman

Inspired by Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Halloween special. When I was a ki1d I looked forward to watching that cartoon every year. It was one of my favorites!

Anyway, I wanted to record the painting process but I had some problems during the process and didn't feel like starting over. I did manage to record the sketch. It is on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjEbqJ-xE_g ). The sketch and painting were done in MyPaint using a Wacom Intuos 5.

I used to own a 1979 Toyota, originally almost the same color, except it wasn`t four wheel drive.

Bad to the Bone

Here’s my latest “Bad” illustration! This is “Bad to the Bone” another addition to my “Bad” series of children (so far just girls) in cooperation with a monster like being. My working title, all of about 1 hour, was “Just Bad”. Well, obviously that didn’t stick. It was only my working title until I figured out what monster would be behind the little girl. This was drawn and painted in MyPaint and Photoshop using a Wacom Intuos 5 graphic tablet.

The Defeat of the Hulk

This single panel comic was provoked by a discussion about the X-Men and the Avengers. For the most part one side was saying the Hulk would take care of everyone of the X-Men... my thoughts were if he could never be provoked to become the Hulk then he would never be a threat.

I could only find one reference shot and multitudes of caricatures based upon that photo so I wanted to create him a bit different than all the others. I usually draw/paint in Photoshop but I was recently introduced to, what this was created in, MyPaint.

Hayao Miyazaki

My rendition of Hayao Miyazaki, the manga artist, animator and director. He created and directed such masterpieces as “Castle in the Sky“, “Spirited Away” and “Ponyo“.

It was initially sketched on paper and then painted in Photoshop.

World of Art

In creating this image I danced around quite a bit. I started off looking for some reference images but didn’t find many that fit my idea of things. So, I decided to create a reference in 3D Studio Max. Mainly for the water aspect of the painting because even though I love the water and how it can add a touch of magic to any environment, it isn’t very easy to get it right and will harm the painting more than help it if you don’t get it right. And being that my painting’s subject was surrounded I wanted to get it fairly “right“. As I got into modeling things, I thought that maybe I would just do the whole thing in 3D instead of a 2D painting. But then I came to the point that I just couldn’t get the lighting the way I wanted. I tried different things in Photoshop to give it that atmosphere I was looking for and then realized that everything is too realistic. Although I wanted a semi-sense of realism, I wanted more the feeling of fantasy with a touches of cartoon like exaggerations. And so I started over. I first sketched it out on a piece of paper and then painted it in Photoshop. Most of the elements from the 3D version are in the 2D version but I am much happier with the results of the 2D painting.

Star Wars - TNJO - Balance Point

As a kid I was always fascinated and drawn in with comic books and the stories they told. Among my most favorited were “X-Men” and “Avengers“. Aside from the fact that these stories were about people that were born different and through that they were shunned, or even hunted, by those they were risking their lives to protect, I was also drawn in by the art work. The pictorial form of telling a story was intriguing and captivating. I have always been a more visually stimulated person. The printed word seemed to be almost hypnotic through which I would simply zone out and not understand a word I had read. Therefore I would wind up reading the same paragraph again and again just to understand and remember everything I had been attempting to consume.

Another childhood favorite was the Star Wars movies. I didn’t want to do the original stories because they have been done by multiple publishers. So, I had read a few post Battle of Endor novels (21-26 years post) from the “The New Jedi Order” series and decided to do a bit from one of those novels as a graphic novel. So I present you with an excerpt from Balance Point... chapter 14…

Tribute to Steve Jobs - RIP

Here`s to Steve Jobs and all for which he was dubbed a symbol. A leader and one of the pioneers in the personal computer, design, and CG industries. That pushed all other competitors to keep up or get left behind.

Hopefully the image communicates the lonesomeness and solidarity of a man in his position. Along with the obvious symbols of the bitten apple, the Pixar lamp, and the well known glossy white design of so many apple products. Aside from those obvious elements there are other symbols of tribute to his memory and accomplishments that are a little less obvious and that I leave to your discovery.
