I don't think her efforts are in vain... When a woman decides to leave her man, this is usually a real decision and there is no "come back"... Men can't do that... :)
The problem is not just men. But they are the source of the problem. This is related with general social status of women in the world ( As business, freedom, economic gain, career and etc...etc...) and women need much more time to be able to achieve fully their demand.
