Heinrich von Kleist was a German poet and Romance writer. Born 1777 in Frankfurt (Oder), he committed suicide in 1811 at the age of 34 beneath Berlin. Born 1777 in the pre-Napoleonic Prussia, he attended military service, then gave it up along with his engagement to a wealthy daughter to seek the writer's loneliness. He never achieved the success of the fellows of his time, Goethe and Schiller, which made Kleist an ambiguous and Kafkaesque hero for subsequent generations. His novels became popular one century after his death, beloved by German teachers to annoy their pupils until today.
